Christopher Frayling on ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

We're not watching Once Upon a Time in the West because we don't have enough time and because, as clever as the cinematic choices are, I think The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is the better film, but what I hope you get from Frayling is just how conscious Leone is of the choices he makes and their effects.  The man is a craftsman par excellence.

  1. I think Leone's craftsmanship is the reason I am enjoying watching The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly more the The Searchers. This movie isn't as straight forward as The Searchers - you have to really watch it (not just listen) to get Leone's artistic vision.

  2. I couldn't agree more. It really asks you to watch it closely. I never have any doubt, when watching Leone's films, that I'm in the hands of a master craftsman.
